What is NEU (Neutrophil-Absolute / Percentage) in Blood Test? What is High and Low NEU (Neutrophil) Value? Causes & Treatment?

Updated: Jun 18, 2024

  • NEU (Neutrophil) in blood test is a test that measures the number of neutrophil cells in your blood.

  • Neutrophils (NEU) are a type of white blood cells that help the body fight infection.

  • Neutrophils (NEU) forms in the bone marrow and is responsible for fighting, trapping and destroying bacteria and microorganisms that invade the body. While the body responds to this battle with redness and swelling (inflammation), neutrophils are effective in healing injury or damage by initiating the tissue repair process. It communicates with other cells to repair damaged cells and mount an immune response.

  • Neutrophils circulating in blood, tissue, and lymph nodes have a spherical shape and can change shape to fight infection.

Neutrophils circulating in blood, tissue, and lymph nodes have a spherical shape and can change shape to fight infection. The normal value of neutrophils in a healthy adult is 2,500 to 7,000 per microliter. Approximately 50% to 70% of white blood cells consist of neutrophils. High NEU (Neutrophil) in a blood test is a value above 7,000 per microliter. If the NEU value is high in the blood test, it means the body is fighting an infection. Increased number of circulating neutrophils is called neutrophilia. Low NEU (Neutrophil) in a blood test is a value above 2,500 per microliter. This condition is called neutropenia. If the NEU value is low in the blood test, it means that the body is not producing enough neutrophils. Since the immune system will work inadequately in low NEU, the body will become more vulnerable to microorganisms and diseases.
What is NEU (Neutrophil-Absolute / Percentage) in Blood Test? What is High and Low NEU (Neutrophil) Value? Causes & Treatment?

What is A Normal NEU (Neutrophil) Value in Blood Test ?

The normal value of neutrophils in a healthy adult is 2,500 to 7,000 per microliter. Approximately 50% to 70% of white blood cells consist of neutrophils. Reference ranges may vary slightly between laboratories.

What is High NEU (Neutrophil) Value in Blood Test?

  • High NEU (Neutrophil) in a blood test is a value above 7,000 per microliter.

  • If the NEU value is high in the blood test, it means the body is fighting an infection.

  • Increased number of circulating neutrophils is called neutrophilia.

What Causes High NEU (Neutrophil) in Blood Test?

  • Infection

  • Inflammation

  • Heart attack

  • Leukemia

  • Blood transfusion

  • Stress

  • Excessive exercise

  • Tissue damage from burns, surgery, or trauma

  • Loss of blood

  • Some drug reactions

  • Surgical removal of the spleen

High NEU (Neutrophil) Symptoms

  • Fever

  • Repeated infections.

  • Sores.

  • Swelling

These symptoms may be observed. In addition, it is possible to see symptoms related to the disease that causes high NEU (Neutrophil).

How to Treat High NEU (Neutrophil) Level?

  • To treat high NEU, the underlying cause must be found. Treatment should be arranged accordingly. If there is a high NEU due to an infection, the source of this infection should be found and treated.

  • A healthy lifestyle can reduce inflammation and reduce some factors that cause neutrophil to rise.

  • A balanced diet, regular exercise and avoiding stress can be beneficial in this regard.

What is Low NEU (Neutrophil) in Blood Test?

  • Low NEU (Neutrophil) in a blood test is a value above 2,500 per microliter.

  • This condition is called neutropenia.

  • If the NEU value is low in the blood test, it means that the body is not producing enough neutrophils.

  • Since the immune system will work inadequately in low NEU, the body will become more vulnerable to microorganisms and diseases.

What Causes Low NEU (Neutrophil) in Blood Test?

Some possible factors that cause low neutrophil include:

  • Cancer and cancer treatments

  • Some drugs

  • Some Infections

  • Autoimmune diseases

  • Bone marrow disorders

  • Chronic idiopathic neutropenia

  • Vitamin deficiencies

  • Abnormalities of the spleen

Low NEU (Neutrophil) Symptoms

Symptoms of diseases and conditions that cause low neutrophil are observed. It is detected in a blood test. Symptoms such as high fever, chills, sweating and fatigue may be observed.

How to Treat Low NEU (Neutrophil) Level?

Treatment varies depending on the underlying cause. Treatments can be applied for causes such as bone marrow disorders, immune system problems or infections. In case of low NEU, the body becomes vulnerable to infections as its defense abilities decrease. Therefore, measures such as wearing a mask, washing hands regularly and thoroughly, avoiding large crowds and people with colds or other infectious diseases support treatment.
